1 dead, 1 injured after car crashes into farm pond

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — One man is dead and one is injured after the car they were riding in went airborne and crashed into a pond in southeastern Iowa late Tuesday.

The Iowa State Patrol said in a report released Thursday the crash happened in Lee County near Donnellson.

A car driven by 26-year-old Hoyt Reynolds of Fort Madison went through a stop sign on Highway 2 and off the road, became airborne and landed in a farm pond, where it became submerged.

Reynolds was able to escape the vehicle and call for emergency help.

Volunteer divers from Keokuk found the vehicle and recovered the body of 24-year-old passenger Thomas Walljasper, who was pronounced dead. Reynolds received treatment at a local hospital.
