2 inmates killed in Nebraska prison riot

Two inmates were killed in a Nebraska prison Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

The incident at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in southeast Nebraska occurred after inmates rioted against staff members and started a fire in a courtyard.

Prison officials said the disturbance involved about 40 inmates. The prison was placed on lockdown for several hours.

No prison employees were injured. An unspecified number of inmates suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening, Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes told the AP.

Doug Koebernick, an inspector general who oversees the corrections department, told the AP he plans to conduct “a full investigation into the circumstances and catalysts of the riot.”
