3 tons of gold spill on Russian runway

Three tons of gold spilled onto a Russian runway after a cargo plane’s door flew open after takeoff, according to The Associated Press.

The spill happened at the Yakutsk airport Thursday. Officials say the plane was carrying 9.3 tons of gold and other precious metals. Apparently previous damage to a door handle was to blame for the door’s ability to open.

The Interior Ministry says 172 gold bars were recovered.
