Adamczyk beats Melchert in GOP treasurer race

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A small business owner who wants to eliminate the office he is running for won the Republican primary for state treasurer.

Matt Adamczyk of Wauwatosa defeated Randy Melchert, a government-compliance attorney, on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Adamczyk says he’s running for treasurer so he can eliminate the office. He says he’ll start by cutting its three staff positions, which would save about 80 percent of the budget.

Adamczyk runs a family heating and cooling company. He advances to the Nov. 4 general election, where he’ll face the winner of the Democratic primary, as well as Constitution Party candidate Andrew Zuelke.

The office is open because outgoing Republican Kurt Schuller isn’t running for re-election. He was elected in 2010 after promising to serve only one four-year term.
