Advice for avoiding charity scammers on Giving Tuesday

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Giving Tuesday encourages everyone to support charities during the holiday shopping season, but it’s also prime time for scammers to take advantage of people’s generosity.

Wisconsin consumer protection officials are offering advice to avoid giving money to the wrong people.

If people solicit donations from you, ask for the name, address, and phone number of the organization.

Don’t make any payments over the phone.

Don’t click any links in emails, text messages, or social media posts, especially if you don’t know the person who sent or posted the link.

If someone asks you to write a check, write the name of the organization on the check, not an individual’s name.

There are ways to do research on organizations as well.

You can go to Charity Navigator or give.org.
