After Ferguson: UW-L hosts open forum on race relations
Grand jury decisions in Ferguson and NYC have sparked conversation
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — With recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men in Ferguson, MO and New York City, many are taking a closer look at race relations.
The cases have spurred conversations about racial tensions between police and minorities.
UW-La Crosse held an open forum Wednesday night on campus for the public to talk about the aftermath of the Ferguson case and protests.
The forum was a chance for people to process their thoughts and feelings about what happened in Ferguson and also bring up any questions they might have going forward in our own city.
“We need to have a conversation about race, there’s a real issue systematically that we have ignored for so long and I think that Ferguson was the gasoline to the fire that already exists,” said UW-La Crosse graduate student Shaundel Spivey.
The forum was put on by UW-L’ s Residence Life, Campus Climate, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Multicultural Student Services and Institute for Social Justice.
