Ahoy, mateys! La Crosse police offer tips on foiling ‘porch pirates’ as gift deliveries rise
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Online shopping and package deliveries are expected to increase with the holidays approaching, so be on the lookout for so-called “porch pirates” hijacking packages.
“We are going to be have people getting and receiving more and more packages,” said La Crosse Police Lt. Linnea Miller.
The La Crosse Police Department has some tips on how to keep packages from being stolen, Miller said.
No. 1 is to pick up packages as soon as they are delivered.
“One of the best things, though, is to be constantly searching and checking and don’t leave those packages out for too long,” Miller said.
Another tack is to providing delivery instructions to put packages in a discreet place. Miller also suggests scheduling packages to arrive on days when people are home. People can track packages and, if possible, should get alerts sent to their phones.
If a package goes missing, contact the police department, she said.
“If you do have a package stolen, please contact the police department as soon as you’re aware that package is stolen, so that we can start canvassing the area, looking for other video cameras,” Miller said.
