ALERT DAY Today Due To Travel Impacts From Snow & Freezing Drizzle

ALERT DAY today due to travel impacts from a period of snow, sleet and/or freezing drizzle.

A clipper system will track east/southeast across our area today, bringing periods of light snow, sleet and/or freezing drizzle near and south of the I-90 corridor. Mainly snow will fall in northern parts of the viewing area, with bursts of moderate snow at times. The precipitation will be most persistent this morning, then taper early to mid-afternoon as it shifts east. It will be warmer today with highs ranging from the upper 20s (north)… to the low-mid 30s (around LSE)… to the mid 30s south.

Similar to the system this past Monday, I’m not expecting a lot of snow from this clipper… but it doesn’t take much snow or freezing drizzle to cause lots of problems on the roads. It’s looking like just a trace to 1″ will be possible near and south of I-90… with 1″ to 4″ north of I-90, including the Eau Claire area. Expect the highest totals near and north of I-94. The slightly higher snow totals expected in northern parts of the area has prompted the NWS to issue a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY through mid-afternoon… for Eau Claire, Clark, Chippewa, Dunn, Pepin, Wabasha, Buffalo, Trempealeau and Jackson Counties.

Flurries could linger in spots early this evening, otherwise expect mostly cloudy skies overnight. Lows will be in the mid-upper teens to near 20F.

Another weak disturbance could bring some light snow (light mix far south?) Friday afternoon and evening. Any snow accumulations would likely be around 1″ or less. Otherwise, expect mainly cloudy skies with highs in the mid 20s to low 30s.

Looking Ahead… Slight chance of light snow showers or flurries Saturday. It will turn colder Saturday with highs in the low 20s. Sunday looks dry with partly sunny skies, but it will be even colder with highs only in the low-mid teens. Low temps Saturday and Sunday night will drop into the single digits.

It continues to look like colder than average temps will stick around right through next week. Highs look to mainly be in the teens to low 20s, with lows in the single digits to low teens. Much of the period looks dry, with a mix of sun and clouds. However, some models graze our area with a chance of snow showers later Monday into Tuesday morning… thanks to a storm system tracking by to our southeast.
