Apparent drowning victim celebrating graduation

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Family members say the young man who apparently drowned in Lake Minnetonka was celebrating his high school graduation when he disappeared.

The mother of Kennedy Maddox says her 20-year-old son was on a boat with friends late Tuesday afternoon and jumped in the water to cool off. Irene Maddox says a friend jumped in after him, but Kennedy never surfaced. She says her son knows how to swim, but wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

Recovery crews are focusing on an area about 300 feet from Big Island. KMSP-TV says the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department has used sonar to try to locate Maddox, who graduated from Minnetonka High School a few weeks ago.
