April Referendum: Cut Monroe Co. Board to 16?

SPARTA, WI — Voters in Monroe County will decide if the County Board should downsize its membership by one-third.

The county clerk certified a petition Tuesday presented by some supervisors last month. It asked to cut the County Board from 24 members to 16. That means it will appear on the April 2014 ballot.

Supporters say there are too many board members, causing excessive discussion and not enough action. Opponents believe that would mean less representation.

If approved by the voters, the reduction would take place starting 2016 following a redistricting process.
