Aquinas H.S. students learn dangers of texting and driving

It's part of the "It Can Wait" campaign

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — More than 300 students are taking part in a state-wide effort to keep not only themselves, but others safe behind the wheel.

Aquinas High School teamed up with AT&T and AAA Wednesday for the “It can Wait” campaign, a program to educate new drivers on the dangers of texting and driving.

The seminar at the high school included taking a pledge to never text behind the wheel, and a documentary with stories of people who’s life has been altered by distracted driving.

Students could even try texting while driving with a driving simulator to learn firsthand how dangerous it can be. “I was trying to stay on the road, but I couldn’t stay focused when I took out the cell phone. So I kept on swerving making these mistakes. I was surprised because I thought I could stay on if I kept looking up and looking back, but like just a couple of seconds and I was off the road,” said student Gregory Schaub.

The “It Can Wait “movement has reached more than 40 cities and 21,000 high school students throughout Wisconsin.
