Aquinas’ Silcox, Viroqua’s Leer/Cress duo advance to Day 2 of State Tennis

The first day of WIAA Girls Individual State Tennis saw four matches featuring Coulee Region athletes.

Central’s top doubles team of Kayla Holman and Katie Johnson lost in the first round in Division 1 to Green Bay Southwest’s Mallory Kerhin and Janelle Novotny 6-4, 6-0.

In Division 2, Aquinas No. 1 singles Danica Silcox advanced to Friday’s Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Maria Burrows of Kohler. Silcox will face Catholic Memorial’s Jessica Jacobson Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Silcox’s teammate Kate Fortney lost her first-round match to Sofie Merrick of Regis, 6-3, 6-0.

In D2 doubles, the Viroqua team of Cammie Leer and Anneka Cress defeated the duo of Claire Liebe and Rianna Krist from Sheboygan Falls 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. They play Friday at 12:15 in the Round of 16 against JJ Krohn and Lexi Kass of Brookfield Academy.
