Area fire departments host a joint EMS training session
Pig organs are used to train local EMT's
ONALASKA, Wisc. (WKBT) — The Onalaska and Holmen fire departments hosted a joint EMS training session on Monday for all area emergency departments.
The hands-on training utilized pig hearts and lungs because of their similar anatomy to human organs.
By dissecting and reviewing the organs EMT’s have a better understanding of bleeding control, ventilation, and airway procedures.
The two-hour class was instructed by a Terry Dorshorst, a Gundersen AIR Flight Nurse who showed trainee’s life-saving skills that are beneficial in real world emegency situations.
Dorshorst says using pig organs for this kind of training is beneficial.
“This way we’re going to give them the equipment that we normally put in our patient, only we’re going to do this on a pig lung and we’re going to let them see their desicions – if they’re the right or the wrong decisions – and we can then educate from there”, he says.
The Holmen, Shelby, and Onalaska fire departments were all present at the EMS event and EMT’s who attend the event say being able to share stories and equipment helps all emergency departments in our area.
