Area school receives ‘Cash for Classrooms’

La Crosse area students’ ideas to improve their classrooms are now becoming a reality thanks to the “Cash for Classrooms” program.

The program, which was created by Misty’s Dance Unlimited and the Coulee Parenting Connection, allows students to submit grants for items ranging from basic classroom needs, to new mats to nap on.

The two businesses awarded students from Cathedral Elementary the funding to improve their classrooms. The money will go to a new listening center, religious videos and an online reading program for parents and their children to use at home.

The long term goal of the program is to build a partnership between small businesses and area schools.

“We are so excited to offer Cash for Classrooms for community schools,” said Misty’s Dance Unlimited owner Misty Lown. We firmly believe that schools and small buisness are the fabric of the community, so when we partner together the community is stronger.”

Lown, the co-creator of the program, says she and Lissa Carlson of Coulee Parenting Connectoin received more than 20 grant applications. This year the program funded every grant that was submitted.

“It’s really hard to turn down a grant that is written in crayon that says, ‘Please help us. come into our classroom,’ saying we need new books or new resources for learning,” Lown said.
