Area students bite into World Food Day

Bangor Elementary students eat some Ecker's Apple farm apples

BANGOR, Wis. (WKBT) — Area students are taking a break from their classes to enjoy some local apples.

Students from La Crosse County and La Crescent Hokah Schools took part in the ‘Great Apple Crunch’ Friday. It’s a nationwide movement to support World Food Day.

Students from Bangor Elementary celebrated the day by biting into a locally grown apple from Ecker’s Apple farm in Trempealeau.

The district’s director of nutrition services says it’s a great way for kids to enjoy healthy food without disguising its flavor.

“I didn’t have to cover it in cheese or sugar or anything. They just ate the apples. And as I was watching them walk back into the buildings, the apples were gone. They consumed the entire the apple. A lot of kids told me they were eating the seeds because it was so good,” said Kerri Feyen, of West Salem School District’s Nutrition Services.

Last year students from the West Salem School district ate more than 21,000 apples.
