Area workers celebrate ‘Worker’s Memorial Day’
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Numbers from the AFL-CIO show 150 workers in the U..S die each day from hazardous working conditions.
Their co-workers took time to remember them Thursday night, along with those injured on the job.
They united at Green Island Park in La Crosse for the annual Worker’s Memorial Day.
Family and co-workers honored the fallen by sharing memories of loved ones lost.
The mother of Brooke Baures was one of the speakers. Baures died in food elevator accident at the WingDam Saloon and Grill…in Fountain City, where she worked.
Her mother says her memory is still alive thanks to events like the one Thursday..
“The support has been amazing, just the opportunity to meet new people that continue to support you going through what they been through, they either understand. They’ve been there or they simply support the thought of workplace safety,” said Kerri Baures.
Since Baures’ death the elevator has since been removed, and the business was fined by OHSA.
