Assignment: Education-Trekking Through Trempealeau
A simple stroll by Trempealeau Elementary School students through the city streets encouraged Trempealeau area families and businesses to come running.
“I don’t think we expected to raise this much,” said Gail Jansen, Trempealeau Elementary PTO member.
The school’s PTO wanted to hold a fundraiser to help buy new fitness equipment.
“We’ve sold so many thing like wrapping paper and pizzas,” said Jansen. “I think people were kind of tired of doing it, and with this economy we thought what do we want to do?”
Well, it just so happens that the month of May is dedicated to get people moving. So, the PTO decided to use this theme pair it with their need for sports equipment and create a fundraiser called Trekking Through Trempealeau.
“May is fitness month. So, in honor of fitness month, we wanted to get the people out walking,” said Jill Bratberg, Trempealeau Elementary PTO member.
“We walked three miles through Trempealeau and came here for some snacks,” said Braeden Jacobs, 4th grade student.
The Pre-kindergartners through second graders committed to walk 1 mile. The 3rd through 5th graders walked 3 miles. The students collected pledges for their commitment and the PTO went to community businesses.
“We asked probably 40 sponsors,” said Bratberg. “We said the minimum of $50 would get you on the back of our t-shirt. Well, about 30 more people came out of the woodwork. So, we have 70 sponsors.”
This outpouring of support from neighbors and businesses helped the school more than double their fundraising goal.
“All I can say is Trempealeau is a great place to live, and if you ask them they deliver,” said Jansen.
“I would do it again because it’s really fun and you exercise a lot,” said Alanna Peters, 4th grade student.
A fundraiser that really worked-out well for everyone.
