Astronaut Mark Lee attending Deke Slayton Museum fundraiser Aug. 4

SPARTA (WKBT)- If you’ve ever wanted to meet an astronaut, your chance is coming up.

The Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum is holding a fundraising dinner with astronaut Mark Lee.

Lee is a Viroqua native who served 17 years as an astronaut with NASA. He flew four space shuttle missions, went around the world 517 times, and completed four spacewalks.

Museum director Alyssa Young said a small town man like Lee walking in space sends the Coulee Region an important message.

“Whatever you want to do, if you set your mind to it and you have a goal, you can achieve that goal,” said Young.

The event will be held at the American Legion in Sparta. Tickets are $40 apiece and are available on the museum’s website.
