La Crosse County awards $1.3 million in grants for flood projects

The funding comes from the county's Stormwater Infrastructure Grant Program, fueled by ARPA funding. Grants up to $50,000 were available for conceptual applications and up to $500,000 for designed and ready-to-go projects. Funding for nine projects were approved Monday by the Planning, Resource and Development Committee.

City of La Crosse accepting letters to Santa

Each year, La Crosse's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department run letters from city hall to the man in the red suit. Park officials say that any letters postmarked by December 11 will be answered by the jolly man himself!

Head-on crash kills two drivers on bridge between Prairie Du Chien and Marquette

According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, 43-year-old Tracy Jo Larson of Prairie Du Chien and 36-year-old Luke Hackman of Decorah, Iowa collided head-on travelling on US Highway 18 Sunday morning. Second man accused in January La Crosse homicide arrested

U.S. Marshalls took Nelson Brown into custody Friday in Mesa, Arizona. Brown is one of two accused in the shooting death of Ernest Knox on La Crosse's north side. La Crosse Police identified Brown and Karvel Freeman as suspects in Knox's death. In early March, police arrested Freeman in Tennessee.

Viroqua man injured in truck vs tractor crash

According to a release from the Vernon County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 10:45 a.m. near the Town of Franklin. A truck driven by 37-year-old Thomas Brudos collided with the tractor as Brudos turned off of County NN onto Thompson Road.

UPDATE: La Crosse County Sheriff candidate concedes race after filing objection to recount

Republican Fritz Leinfelder -- who lost to Democrat John Siegel by just 175 votes -- filed the objection Monday morning, saying in part that more than 1000 voters' addresses did not meet legal requirements for La Crosse County residency. Leinfelder's objection argues that the nature of students' residency on college campuses are "transitory", and they do not meet the requirements to vote in the November 8 election.

One person injured in snow skid crash; narrowly misses school bus

According to the Vernon County Sheriff, on Tuesday morning, 46-year-old Charles Schuster from Menomonee Falls began to skid on County Highway EE as he tried to slow down for an intersection on State Highway 80. Authorities claim Schuster -- heading west-- slid through the stop sign and missed striking a school bus heading north on State Highway 80.

Strollers recalled for fall hazard

The recall involves Mockingbird Single-to-Double Strollers. The US Consumer Product and Safety Commission says the lower side of the stroller frame can crack, posing a fall risk to children in the stroller.

Body found in La Crosse’s Cameron Park

La Crosse Police responded to a welfare check Friday morning. The La Crosse Fire Department and the La Crosse County Medical Examiner also responded to the scene on the eastern edge of the park near 5th Avenue South. Responders created a visual barrier around the body.

La Crosse Police arrest man connected to incident near Northside Elementary

According to a release from the La Crosse Police Department, staff at Northside notified them after seeing a man drive a gold-colored vehicle drive by the school multiple times. Staff claimed that the driver was wearing a mask and holding what appeared to be a gun in the air. Children were out for recess at the time of the incident, staff said.

Wall mounted basketball hoops recalled, one death reported

18,000 Goalsetter wall-mounted basketball goals were recalled Thursday because they can unexpectedly detach from the wall and fall to the ground. There have been four reports of the unit detaching from a wall, in one of which, a 14-year-old boy in Indiana was killed in 2018
