Barriers to affordable housing explored at summit in La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The need for affordable housing and how it’s impacting the community was the focus of a summit in La Crosse.
The hope is to educate local government and business leaders on the barriers to affordable housing and how they may hurt the community.
In 2017, the 7 Rivers Alliance identified the lack of affordable housing in the region as one of the three barriers to attracting and retaining a workforce.
The 7 Rivers Alliance and Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority sponsored the event.
“It starts with those communities having that conversation about what do we need in our community and how do we partner with a developer to make that happen,” said 7 Rivers Alliance CEO Chris Hardie.
A 7 Rivers Alliance study found about a third of homeowners in our area spend 30 percent of their income on housing each month.
