Beating the holiday blues

While joyful for many, the holiday season can be a time of loneliness for a lot of people.

It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or the holiday blues.

Health experts say it can be triggered by the loss of a loved one, a feeling of being alone, or being overwhelmed.

Symptoms include a person being withdrawn, not sleeping well or having trouble sleeping, and trouble eating.

“The holidays are supposed to be a joyous time, but that doesn’t mean you always have to feel joyous, and if you don’t, that’s okay, recognize those feelings, acknowledge those feelings, if they feel like they’re becoming overwhelming, seek out that support system,” says Christie Harris, Wellness Education Specialist at Gundersen Health System.

Harris says calling 211 is a good resource for professional help.

Otherwise, reaching out to a friend or loved one is a good alternative.
