Believe it or not: Feb. 6, 2021 marks a decade since the Packers won the Super Bowl

(WKBT) – Never take sports for granted, because you just never know when your favorite sports team will win a championship.

For the cheese heads everywhere, that happened 10 years ago already.

Saturday marks a decade since the Green Bay Packers won their last Super Bowl in thrilling fashion over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Arlington, Texas on Feb. 6, 2011.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson opened the scoring for Green Bay by beating cornerback William Gay one-on-one on the outside and catching a 29-yard dime from Aaron Rodgers for a touchdown.

Safety Nick Collins capitalized with an opportunistic pick-six on the next defensive possession to give the Packers a 14-0 lead towards the end of the first quarter.

Green Bay led 21-10 at halftime, but the Steelers cut it 21-17 going into the fourth with significant momentum.

Enter Clay Matthews.

Number 52 forced a fumble to running back Rashard Mendenhall on the first play in the final quarter, and linebacker Desmond Bishop scooped up the fumble. The Packers topped off the drive with a Greg Jennings eight-yard touchdown reception from Rodgers.

Pittsburgh, however, answered when Ben Roethlisberger fired a perfect throw to wide receiver Mike Wallace for a 25-yard touchdown. The Steelers converted the 2-point try to make it a 28-25 game.

The Packers responded with a 23-yard field goal from Mason Crosby to extend their lead to 31-25.

Green Bay’s defense never let the Steelers get going on their final opportunity to score. Cornerback Tramon Williams’ pass deflection on 4th-and-5 in Pittsburgh territory sealed the deal for the Pack.

The 31-25 victory gave Green Bay its fourth Lombardi Trophy and 13th overall championship. Rodgers, the Super Bowl MVP, completed 24-of-39 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. The defense took the ball away three times, while the offense played turnover-free football.

The Packers have not been to the Big Game since, despite coming close several times. They’ve lost in four NFC Championship Games following their last Super Bowl win.
