Bicycle theft increases in La Crosse
La Crosse Police Dept. gives suggestions to help
There has been 74 reported bike thefts from May 1-July 2 in the City of La Crosse, according to the La Crosse Police Department.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Though bike locks may not be completely theft proof, the La Crosse Police department has given suggestions to increase the security of your bike:
When locking your bike, make sure to secure the frame and tires to something immobile and/or bolted down
Use a case-hardened “U” lock because cable or chain locking devices are easily cut
If you utilize a regular padlock, make sure it has a 7/16? or larger shank
Lock your bike in a well-lit area that can be seen by passing pedestrians or motorists
Try to secure parts that have quick-release mechanisms, such as tires and seats
Keep a copy of your bike’s make, model, and serial number in a safe place
The Municipal Code of Ordinances 9.15(D) requires registration for bikes that are ridden in the City of Lacrosse. A police report and free bicycle registration can be done at the La Crosse Police Department from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. It can also be done online through the La Crosse Police Department’s online theft report.
If you filled out a police report for a stolen bicycle, you can check the Police Impound Building (Bike Barn) for your bike at 1925 Marco Drive on Isle La Plume. The Bike Barn is open the first Wednesday of each month from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. A copy of your police report must be present to claim your bike.
