Bookmobile heads to Sparta

Program offers kids access to books

SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — It’s not an ice cream truck that is getting kids in Sparta outside, it’s the Bookmobile.

The affectionately named ‘book bug’ hits the streets on Thursdays during the summer, bringing books from the schools’ libraries to the kids. Their goal is to keep the kids reading while school’s out. One of the librarians says it’s especially important in their community where a majority of the kids are on free or reduced lunch. She says that means many of them don’t have access to books over the summer to avoid the summer slide.

“We did some statistics last year and if the kids came 4 or more times during the summer they maintained or increased their reading levels, so right there what a big benefit! So when they start in the fall, they don’t have to relearn back to where they were, they’re already there or above that,” said Darla Schroeder, Library Media Coordinator of Sparta Schools.

Along with the books, the kids also get a snack and can also plan on iPads.
