Boy, 6, drowns in Golden Valley lake

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (AP) — A 6-year-old boy drowned while attending a birthday party at a crowded beach in Golden Valley.

The Star Tribune reports another swimmer noticed the child’s body on the lake bottom in about four feet of water at about 5:30 on Saturday.

Lifeguards at the scene performed CPR and the boy was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The boy is from Golden Valley but his name has not been released.

A Hennepin County deputy says the boy was wearing swimwear and was in the water with a group of family members and kids. Lifeguards were on duty but the deputy says the beach was “extremely busy.”

A state report released last week found drownings in Minnesota at a 10-year high in 2012.
