Caledonia football points to supportive city as key to continued success
CALEDONIA, Minn. (WKBT) — Caledonia football is celebrating their fifth straight state championship, and while they credit hard work as to what got them there they have a secret weapon.
The sign reads ‘Caledonia Welcomes you,’ but it should add as long as you’re not facing them on the gridiron.
The Caledonia Warriors scooped up their 5th straight state championship this weekend. And fans were out in full force.
“They love their football. They love watching their team. We know our community loves our kids, I think we showed that Friday,” said Head Coach Carl Fruechte.
Charter busses filled with Warrior fans made a game hours away feel like a home game, helping the team secure a shutout victory.
“Everyone is supporting you, wants to see you go far. Everyone has each other’s backs,” said Ethan Jacobson, Offensive and Defensive Lineman for the Warriors.
“The strength of our program is our community, our parents,” added Fruechte.
And grandparents.
“This is my oldest, Justin.”
“And this is Jackson, he’s the youngest.”
Danielle Burg is so proud of her team, it’s in her title.
“Number one Proud Granny! *laughs* Hashtag!”
Caledonia’s Number one proud granny’s front yard shows how she’s earned that title. With flags of her grandchildren on full display.
“Didn’t have materials. Just used a fish pole. I had to compromise, just to make them look good.”
They’re the reason she’s a super fan.
“When my grandsons started I really got involved. Everyone just gets into it. Even if your kids aren’t in football the whole town does really.”
And that support can be an advantage.
“I think the whole town makes the kids better,” said Burg.
“They’re definitely a huge factor of it. Knowing that you have the whole town at your back supporting you,” said Jacobson.
The town’s support has helped the team reach five years of football dominance and bragging rights.
“I’m on Facebook all the time, so I’m sure people are sick of me,” said Burg.
And no one can brag quite like a super proud granny.
“I always put something out. Maybe because I have to brag.”
