Canvass of Sparta beer referendum confirms outcome

A final tally of the votes confirms the outcome of the beer referendum in Sparta.

The City Clerk led a final canvass of the votes Friday.

On Tuesday, voters approved a referendum to allow beer sales in the city. It passed by just five votes.

However, the clerk was waiting on eight outstanding absentee ballots. Friday was the deadline for them to show up and only one came in. That was a yes vote.

The clerk says she’s been on edge with such a close race and the possibility of the results changing. “Some people they don’t feel that their vote counts, but this proves that every vote does count,” said Julie Hanson.

Hanson is now waiting to see if a sworn petition comes in asking for a recount. Otherwise, the results will stand.
