Burke will serve as the patron of the Knights and Dames of Malta

A former La Crosse bishop will no longer be a top Vatican post.

Pope Francis has removed Cardinal Raymond Burke from his role as chief Justice of the Vatican’s Supreme Court on Saturday.

Burke will now serve as the patron of the Knights and Dames of Malta.

Burke served as the bishop of La Crosse from 1994 to 2003 and then served in St. Louis before heading to the Vatican in 2008.

In the United States, Burke is popular with conservative Catholics for upholding church rites and traditions.
