Cedar Rapids traffic camera a reliable witness

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Traffic cameras not only catch speeders, they also are neutral witnesses to intersection collisions.

The Gazette reports the video evidence was clear after an accident Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.

A westbound pickup and northbound car collided around 12:15 p.m., slightly injuring both drivers.

Both drivers reported they had the green light. The camera recorded the car’s driver had a red light for several seconds before she entered the intersection.

Sgt. Michael Wallerstedt says cameras at seven Cedar Rapids intersections have captured images from more than 10 accidents.

He says a traffic camera “is an independent witness, and it is infallible, unlike a witness could possibly be.”
