Changes coming for acceptable plastics in La Crosse’s recycling

La Crosse residents will need to pay more attention to their recycling.

The city approved a change requested by Harter’s Quick Cleanup.

Due to the request, plastics numbered 3, 6, and 7 will no longer be accepted as recyclable plastics. Those include PVC, polystyrene, like some bottle caps and plastic foam storage containers, and other miscellaneous plastics.

The city’s recycling coordinator says those plastics make less than one percent of what is regularly recycled.

“It’s going to be very, very minimal to anybody. Those who pay close attention to it will notice certain things coming out, especially the caps, the lids, that kind of stuff,” said City of La Crosse Recycling Coordinator Brandon Shea.

Harter’s says the change is due those plastics not being as reusable as others, which increases the cost of the entire recycling program.
