LA CROSSE, Wis. — Our community came together recently in a big way to help out a great cause.  It probably didn’t hurt that there was chili involved.

Last month’s State Bank Chili Cookoff in La Crosse raised more than $12,000 for the DARE and GREAT programs as well as Habitat for Humanity. Wednesday, the checks were presented.

Organizers say this event isn’t possible without hundreds of volunteer-hours, tasters and the chefs who cook-up 10 to 15 gallons of their special chili recipes.  “They cook all the chili right on-premesis here, then they serve it up and they do a wonderful job.  All the volunteers who helped out, the fraternity organizations, the schools, we just had a great abundance of help this year with the chili cookoff,” says State Bank Financial President and CEO Steve Burgess.

This year’s Chili Cookoff featured 30 entries including one from News 8.
