City of La Crosse cancels popular summer camp
LA CROSSE. Wis. (WKBT) — A popular summer camp is closing its doors before the summer even starts.
Camp Shriver in La Crosse is canceled this summer. The day camp offers activities for both kids with and without special needs.
Closing the camp makes room for the 2016 Midwest Summer Games, put on by the Special Olympics.
The event will be held in La Crosse at the end of July.
Camp organizers say the event gives kids with special needs a chance to to challenge themselves against the best athletes in the Midwest.
“We do a lot of work with special athletes in this area and around the state. Our athletes have a lot of opportunities to compete within the state of Wisconsin, but they don’t have a lot of opportunities to compete at higher levels,” said Kerry Gloede.
Camp organizers plan to bring back Camp Shriver next year.
