College grads celebrate commencement from the comfort of their couches

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Many students were heartbroken when they found out their graduation was canceled.

But one local university is proving that it doesn’t take a stage to celebrate this special day.

UW-La Crosse held a “couch commencement” for the class of 2020.

The ceremony started with a few words from Chancellor Joe Gow before he broke into song.

He strummed his guitar to the school’s Alma Mater

Afterward, the student commencement speakers, Audra Geis and Kathryn Schultz, gave their speeches.

Alumni Association Board Chair, Kyle O’Brian, also shared a few words.

The commencement ended with Pomp and Circumstance, which was played by the UWL Brass Ensemble.

It was short and sweet, but a moment these grads won’t forget.

“I’m really glad I still got some kind of celebratory and commencement-like experience because that’s something I’ve always wanted. I appreciate all the hard work they did to give us that,” said Lorna McMahon, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science.

McMahon will be moving to Texas, where she will attend the University of Houston to get her Ph.D. in cellular microbiology and biochemistry.
