Community meets for ‘brainstorming session’ to save Green Island Ice Arena
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Concerned community members gathered Monday night for a brainstorming session on how to save the Green Island Ice Arena.
Director of the La Crosse Parks and Rec Department, Jay Odegaard, says the city can no longer support the arena at the status quo. That has many concerned it could close the arena permanently.
According to the department, the facility needs millions of dollars in repairs.
River City Youth Hockey President, Ryan Sauter, organized the event at Shimmy’s Bar where the community discussed plans to save the ice on their own.
“We realize that we have to be a part of the solution, so what we’re doing is kind of putting our heads together with the user groups, try and figure out how we can run the facility,” said Sauter.
City council plans to form a committee of parks board members, city council members, and groups of people who use the green island facility. Their next meeting is Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
