Complaint: Former teacher, student text nude pics, send Snapchats

A former Mauston teacher and a 17-year-old student accused of having an inappropriate relationship were caught together by two Juneau County deputies investigating the report, according to court documents.

The Mauston School Board accepted the resignation Monday night of 25-year-old Stewart Thompson, a teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

According to a criminal complaint, two Juneau County detectives followed Thompson and the student on Jan. 26 to a Middleton restaurant. When the two drove back into Juneau County the deputies pulled them over.

The student told deputies Thompson was her history teacher and that they started texting and sending Snapchats in the spring of 2016, according to the criminal complaint. She said they spent time together while she was 16, but didn’t have sex until after her 17th birthday.

She said they started hanging out at Thompson’s apartment, but when the high school got an anonymous letter about their relationship they started driving to his parent’s cabin in Warrens to avoid getting caught, according to the complaint.

A statement released Monday said the district was informed Wednesday about the law enforcement investigation. On the same day, Thompson submitted his resignation.

According to the complaint, the student told deputies Thompson quit his job to make it easier for them to be together.

Thompson was charged Wednesday with child enticement to have sexual contact, exposing a child to harmful material and sexual assault of a student by school staff.

According to court records, Thompson has been released on a signature bond. He will be back in court Feb. 8 for an initial appearance.

District officials said they are cooperating with the investigation and have held off on their own investigation at the request of law enforcement.
