Complaint: La Crosse man had child exploitative videos
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A La Crosse man was in La Crosse County Circuit Court Thursday after police say he had a hard drive filled with child sexual exploitation material in his home.
Jonathan R. Staats, 31, was charged with possession of child pornography and faces a maximum of a $100,00 fine and 25 years in prison.
Staats was arrested Wednesday morning at his home on the 1500 block of 31st Street S. after the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip that he was downloading child pornography. Officers searched his home and recovered an external hard drive with what the complaint described as “a very large amount of clearly recognizable child pornography.”
Additional evidence was found on a laptop belonging to Staats.
According to the complaint, Staats immediately asked for an attorney and was not questioned by police.
Staats was released on a $5,000 signature bond with conditions that he have no contact with children.
He has a previous conviction for stalking from 2008.
