Coronavirus pandemic a good reminder to keep taking Vitamin C

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Staying healthy is a top priority for everyone right now.

That means keep taking your vitamins, especially Vitamin C!

One local dietitian says consuming Vitamin C really helps keep your immune system healthy.

There are no studies that show taking it helps prevent or reduce having the coronavirus.

But it could benefit you in the long haul.

“It acts as an antioxidant in our body,” Gundersen Health System registered dietitian Rebecca Cripe said. “So we have these cells called free radicals that go through our body caused by various things. Stress, pollution in the air, etc. And Vitamin C is a donor. It helps neutralize those free radical cells, they’re basically pre-cancerous cells.”

Cripe says taking Vitamin C also helps shorten the length of a common cold by a day or two.

Vitamin C is rich in foods such as strawberries, tomatoes, oranges and even red, green and yellow peppers.
