Council votes Hayek a 2nd term as Iowa City mayor

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa City Council has unanimously decided Matt Hayek should serve another two-year term as mayor of Iowa City.

It is the city councilor’s second term as leader of the council. The vote occurred Wednesday at the council’s meeting.

The 42-year-old Hayek was elected to the council in 2008 and mayor in 2010. He was re-elected to the council in November.

The mayor votes like any other councilor on council issues and runs council meetings, acts as the city’s spokesman and maintains communication with the city manager.

Hayek is a partner in an Iowa City law firm.
