Crews battle grass fire near Goose Island Campground

LA CROSSE COUNTY, WI — A fire burned about half an acre Tuesday afternoon near Goose Island Campground.
Firefighters from Shelby and Stoddard responded around 3:30 p.m. to put out the fire.
They say county workers saw flames 15 feet in the air and if it had been a little windier, it could have been much worse.
A cause has not been determined yet, but firefighters know the conditions did not help. “The grass was terribly dry, woods are even worse with the leaves, it’s big potential even though the fire danger has been listed as low recently,” said Stoddard Asst. Fire Chief Brian Haydysch.
He says even if burn bans have been lifted, people should be cautious about burning anything.
