Delta variant brings case increase, concerns for doctors in La Crosse, across U.S.

Experts say unvaccinated Americans face the greatest risk.

UNDATED (WKBT) – New cases of COVID-19 are rising in the U.S.

During the past week, new cases rose 66 percent.

More than half of all new cases are from the Delta variant which is even more transmissible than the original strain.

Experts say unvaccinated Americans face the greatest risk.

“We also have many kids under age 12 who have not had the opportunity to get vaccinated yet,” said Paraic Kenny, director of the Kabara Cancer Research Institute at Gundersen Health System. “The vaccinations really are a safe and a free and a very, very effective way of protecting ourselves.”

Researchers at Georgetown University found five under-vaccinated regions.

That could lead to new virus mutations capable of defeating current vaccines, putting the entire nation at risk, the Georgetown researchers say.
