Domestic abuse agencies in Wisconsin looking to expand

More than 2,000 people seek aid daily state-wide

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Domestic abuse agencies in Wisconsin are looking to expand their services but need more money to do so.

Organizations like New Horizons in La Crosse say about $20 million is needed to support their programs over the next six years.

Service agencies in the state help more than 2,000 people on a daily basis but because of a lack of resources agencies have to turn many of them away. More funding would allow agencies to provide more services while helping more victims who come to the shelter.

Advocates say domestic abuse is a problem that hits closer to home than most people might think.

“One in four women are experiencing domestic abuse in Wisconsin. So you probably know somebody, you probably know more than one person that’s being affected by domestic abuse,” said New Horizons Development Director Liz Beard.
