SPARTA, Wis. — Elections shouldn’t be toyed with — unless, of course, toys are the objects of the voting, as is the case at the Monroe County Local History Room & Museum in Sparta.
The museum’s quest is to pick the most popular of the most beloved toys from the 1940s through the ’90s to sub for the museum’s previously planned “1960s Christmas” exhibit.
Like so many of the best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang that aft a-gley because of COVID-19 this year, the museum’s “1960s Christmas” exhibit was postponed a year.
But, perhaps in keeping with the election season, the substitute will be “Monroe County Chooses…The Toys We Love,” debuting Nov. 19.
The most-loved toys to be featured will be up to the public, who can vote online beginning Saturday, Sept. 12, for candidates such as LEGO vs. Erector Sets, Etch A Sketch vs. Play-Doh, G.I. Joe vs. He-Man and more. Many are in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
To participate, go to the online poll in the NEWS section of the Monroe County History website or its Facebook page.
Select your favorite three toys from each category. The toys with the most votes will be featured in the exhibit. Participants are asked to vote only once.
The poll will be open through Sunday, Sept. 20.
The Monroe County Local History Room & Museum at 200 West Main St. in Sparta is open to visitors by reservation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. Admission is free.
