Downtown businesses ask for changes to weekend street parking rules

Organization requests 2-hour weekend parking

Business owners in downtown La Crosse are asking the city to change its weekend parking rules.

Right now, there are two hour limits for street parking downtown during weekdays, but no restrictions on holidays and weekends.

Monday, Downtown Mainstreet presented a letter to the city’s Board of Public Works asking to extend the two hour limit between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. to weekends.

Executive director Robin Moses says too many spots are being occupied for long periods of time during peak weekend business hours.

“Right now what’s happening is when you don’t have turnover on the weekends, you have people who might even have been there stay there all day long. They could be residents, they could be employees of businesses, and really we need to leave those valuable spaces open for people who want to come down to do business,” said Moses.

Downtown Mainstreet says they would like to see people planning to stay more than two hours downtown use the parking ramps instead.

The Board of Public Works passed a motion to approve the request.
