Eau Claire County DA under investigation resigns

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WKBT) — Eau Claire County District Attorney Gary King resigned Friday, sending a letter to Gov. Tony Evers saying he plans to leave Aug. 14.

Evers in June appointed a state commissioner to investigate King after receiving a complaint June 3 about his behavior.

“While I appreciate and welcome the process afforded me, I feel it is in the best interest of everyone that I step away and do so in a manner that will allow for as seamless a transition as possible,” King said in the letter.

He said it would be in the best interest of the office for him to leave, adding that it would not be good for either the office or himself for him to remain.

“As to the complaints filed by two former prosecutors, I take great issue with the claims that have been made,” King said. “It is noteworthy that none of these concerns about my work performance were ever expressed to me by these individuals — not during their time in the office, not upon their departure from the office, nor in the several months since their respective departures.”
