Eau Claire County postpones health ordinance vote

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WKBT) — At its meeting Tuesday evening, the Eau Claire County Board of Supervisors voted 16-12 to postpone consideration of the proposed health ordinance and set up a task force to get input from the business, education, health care and other sectors.

The vote follows a similar move by the Eau Claire City Council last week. County Board Chair Nick Smiar said he would appoint the task force as soon as possible, and supervisors hope to be able to work jointly with the City Council to address the ordinance.

Chamber President and CEO Dave Minor spoke during the public comment period, noting the Chamber’s concerns about the ordinance and encouraging the Board to take action similar to the City Council. Supervisor Gary Gibson cited the Chamber’s position when he proposed the motion to postpone.

Supervisor Missy Christopherson added an amendment clarifying the role of a task force.

In his remarks to the County Board, Minor also emphasized the serious nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical importance of best practices in combatting its spread, including wearing a mask, physical distancing, and good hygiene.

The Chamber is actively participating in the collaborative Chippewa Valley Economic Recovery Task Force, and supports efforts like the statewide “Stop the COVID Spread” campaign by more than 20 organizations including Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, the Wisconsin Hospital Association, the Wisconsin Counties Association, and others.
