Elementary students in La Crosse learn about ice fishing, nature
Unit possible from a grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Nature is providing a classroom today for some area students.
Summit Elementary is adding an ice fishing unit for students, thanks to a grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation.
Students were out Wednesday on the backwaters of the Mississippi River near the school to fish with instructors.
Ice fishing, along with units in the school focus on helping students gain an understanding of the relationships between natural systems and people.
Students are learning ice fishing safety along with rules.
The are a lot of things those participating are taking out of the day.
“I like to wait and let it be quiet, I like quiet too,” said 4th grader Abel Neisius.
“La Crosse being a river town, we want everyone to know that it is safe to go on the ice. But you never go on the ice alone,” said Summit Environmental Elementary physical education teacher Nick O’Keefe.
Wednesday was the first of three days of lessons for students.
