Fielder, Brewers face uncertain futures

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Prince Fielder hugged his tearful teammates and said goodbye to the Milwaukee Brewers in the aftermath of their elimination in the NL championship series.

What comes next for everyone is uncertain.

Fielder is eligible for free agency for the first time after being selected by the Brewers in the first round of the 2002 amateur draft. He led Milwaukee to a franchise-best 96 wins and its first division title in 29 years before St. Louis eliminated the Brewers with a 12-6 win in Game 6 on Sunday night.

Principal owner Mark Attanasio insists the team will make an offer to keep Fielder in Milwaukee, but the financial realities may soon set in for franchise that has a rapidly increasing payroll.
