First phase of construction by City of La Crosse wraps on Fish Hatchery building

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Work continues on the old Fish Hatchery building in Riverside Park.

Last year, the City of La Crosse approved the rezoning of the building for commercial use and an agreement to lease to Hatchery LLC.

The city is paying for renovations to the building.

Phase one of construction, which involved replacing windows and doors, is finished.

City leaders are excited about the new look.

“You can see how much nicer it looks with just the windows and doors done,” said Project Specialist for the La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department Jim Flottmeyer. “It’s really back to what it originally looked like, it enhances this end of the park even with nothing done on the interior.”

The next step is repairing the roof.

That work will begin after Riverfest is done.

The city received a grant to install a new HVAC system.

After that’s finished, Hatchery LLC can begin its own renovations inside the building.

Pending possible delays, Flottmeyer says the building could be ready for use next spring.
