Flooding leads to road closures in several counties

Overnight flooding leads to road closures in Trempealeau, Jackson and Eau Claire counties

Sunday night’s heavy rains made for a messy Labor Day for many counties in the northern part of the News 8 area.

A flash flood warning was declared for Trempealeau County at around 1 p.m. Monday, after the Sheriff’s Department reported a dam breach on the Buffalo River near Strum. People living along the Buffalo River, including the Village of Eleva, were urged to find higher ground and avoid driving across roads covered with water.

Earlier Monday, flash flooding also shut down parts of the Buffalo River State Trail. The trail just west of Eleva was closed, as well as the stretch from west of Osseo at Tracey Valley Road to County Road G in Jackson County.

The Town of Cleveland in Jackson County declared a state of emergency due to the number of roads that are damaged or closed due to flooding. County Highway F is also closed near the Town of Alma after the road washed out.

A number of other roads in Jackson County are reported closed, including:

US Highway 10
N Alma Center Road
E Bramer Road
Lange Road
Hill Road
Fairview Road
Town Hall Road
Stage Road

Authorities ask people in the area of flooding to avoid the roads if possible and to not go around barricades.

Emergency management officials in Jackson, Trempealeau and Eau Claire Counties continue to assess road damage and say they will open roads as soon as possible.
