Food forests project explained to community
Edible landscape will be grown next to La Crosse YMCA
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — After years of work, a new concept growing healthy foods has made it’s way to the La Crosse area.
It’s called a food forest and members of the community met at the La Crosse area YMCA to learn more about the new project on Saturday.
A food forest is a patch of land where people in the community can grow foods mimicking an ecosystem. The edible landscape will be grown right off of West Avenue next to the La Crosse area YMCA.
Organizers say it’s not only a great way for people to grow organic foods, but also a great way to bring the community together.
“This is an opportunity to educate as well as really grow together and I think really empowering people to grow food and the best way to do that is in the community and learning from each other,” said Pam Hartwell, the executive director of the Hillview Agriculture Center.
Organizers hope to begin planting in Spring.
